Student Work Program
Maga-book Industry
This God ordained outreach literature ministry not only helps students pay their school account, but more importantly, it teaches responsibility, economy, and self-discipline, while enhancing spiritual growth.

Other Work Opportunities
Students may also work in another job that provides opportunity for ministry.  Students will be responsible to arrange job, provide their own transportation, and work at least 15 hours per week.

Leadership Training Program
The uniqueness and purpose of SOULS is to train gifted, proven students on the level of application in leadership.  Therefore the Leadership Training Program places on the student different responsibilities in the practical and administrative operations of the school.  All of these activities will be accomplished and overseen by the students with guidance and input from the staff.  Some of the leadership positions are as follows:

1.     Food Service

2.     Resident Assistant

3.     Maga-book Assistant

4.     Yearbook Editor

5.     Worship Coordinator

6.     Activities Coordinator

7.     Purchaser

8.     Facility Upkeep

Financial Policies
The secondary purpose of the work program is to offset the costs of attending SOULS.

1.     A non-refundable application fee of $30 is required when application is submitted.

2.     The account from the previous year must be settled before a student is permitted to enroll for each current school year.

3.     Students must provide $2,500 as a deposit toward their tuition at the time of each registration.

4.     The expenses of tuition, room, and board are included in the school cost of $9,135.  Any personal expenses incurred by the student will be the direct responsibility of the student (e.g., textbooks, laundry, e-mail, phone, etc.)

5.     Checks are to be made payable to Southern Outreach Leadership School.  A fee will be charged to the student for any insufficient fund checks received towards the student’s account.

6.     A student’s account must be current to participate in graduation services, receive certificates, or request transcripts.

7.     Students withdrawing from school prior to the end of the quarter will have an adjustment made to the account.  School costs will be charged to the account on a prorate basis according to the date drop notification received by the school office.  A full refund/final accounting cannot be given until the school office has had adequate time to issue final charges and credits to student’s account.  A full accounting is available upon request.

Mission Statement
Jesus said if we know and follow Him, godly character, disciple-making, and evangelistic fruitfulness will be the natural and spontaneous results.  We will mentor our students to know and follow Jesus.
Student Government
This is a small committee of students who are voted into office by the entire student body.  One faculty member also sits in meetings to guide and advise.  The student government is responsible to the staff for the implementation of student expectations as outlined in the bulletin and the operation of the (L)eadership (T)raining (P)rogram.

Student Expectations
Automobile Policy:
Car Insurance:  Students with cars must provide proof of current automobile insurance and present driver’s licenses to the SOULS office.

Parking:  Cars are to be parked in designated parking areas.

Speed Limit:  Because SOULS shares the campus with Pine Lake Retreat, strict observance of the speed limits is mandatory to ensure the safety of all pedestrians, children, and adults throughout the campus.

Medical Insurance
Students are covered by Home Health Education Service (HHES) with Workman’s Compensation if injured while canvassing.  All injuries are to be reported within 48 hours to qualify for payment.  Health insurance is not provided by SOULS or HHES.

Curfew
The student government will decide curfew times; however, to respect individual preferences, quiet time in the dorms begins a half hour before curfew.  The lobby is also closed at curfew.

Weekend Leaves
Weekend leaves are to be approved by the student government.  Written requests for leaves must be submitted to the SOULS office 2:00 p.m. before student government meetings.  Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Dress Code
Belief in Christ’s death and soon coming separates the Christian from the world.  This is shown in all aspects of life.  Modesty in dress distinguishes a Christian.  Students are asked to study dress and its principles from the Bible and Ellen G. White’s writings.

Although each person has a right to his/her individual preferences, SOULS reserves the right to require certain dress standards for the ultimate purpose of representing Christ.

Dress Standards:
  1. Neat:  This means having clean, ironed clothes and maintaining daily impeccable personal hygiene.  Because of the nature of our work, men are asked to keep their faces clean-shaven and their hair length above the collar and kept well-groomed.
  2. Professional:  First impressions are extremely important.  Students are asked to dress professionally and appropriately during school, church services, and work.
  3. Modest:  Clothes should not be tight or revealing in any way that draws attention to the body.  This is crucial for personal safety in urban ministries and also for keeping the focus on God rather than the messenger.

Dress Categories:

1.     Formal:  (church, special occasions, business meetings, etc…)
Men:  Shirts with ties and/or suits, slacks.
Women:  Dresses, blouses with sleeves, skirts that are loose-fitting and fall below the knee when sitting.

2.     Business Casual:  (Classroom, ministry-related work, etc…)
Men:  Shirts with collars (no large advertising logos), pants (no jeans)
Women:  Dresses, shirts with sleeves (no large advertising logos), skirts that are loose-fitting and fall below the knee when sitting.

1.     Casual:  (Off-hours and recreational activities, etc…)
Men and women:  T-shirts, modest sleeveless shirts, jeans and shorts that cover the thigh. Note:  In all categories jewelry is not to be worn.

Computers
Although SOULS provides computers for student use, students may bring their own computer.   Students are asked not to bring movies, video games, or televisions to SOULS.  Students are asked to use internet access and DVD’s for non-entertainment only.  As with every privilege, if it is not used responsibly, it will be forfeited.

Music
Music has the potential to be spiritually uplifting or debilitating.  All music played on campus is to be evaluated and chosen based upon the spirit of the artist, the inspirational character, the lyrical content, and spiritual impact of the harmonies and rhythm. Music played publicly (in the lobby, dorm halls, kitchen, school vehicles, or study rooms) must adhere to principles agreed upon and specified by all SOULS listeners.  Music played privately, is music played strictly for the individual’s listening in private such as in personal dorm rooms or headsets and cannot be heard by anyone else except the individual.  It must be evaluated according to the guidelines of the first paragraph of this section.  Students are encouraged to study music and its principles from the Bible and Ellen G. White’s writings.

Dating
SOULS recognizes that courtship and marriage are God-ordained gifts to restore the image of God in man.  It is with the hope that SOULS can instill principles that promote mature courtships and create strong marriages and families among leadership that the following guidelines of dating/courtship are made (SOULS considers dating/courting to be exclusive and focused investment of one student in another):

1.     All dating is conducted in an open manner.

2.     All couples seek a godly, experienced counselor.

3.     Couples enhance relationship potentials by strengthening verbal communication skills.

4.     All couples commit to study the principles of courtship and marriage as found in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy.

Refusal to follow these guidelines is grounds for probation and/or dismissal.

Because of the challenging nature of the leadership training program, students under the age of 21 are asked to refrain from dating during the settling-in time of the first quarter.

Care of Facility
As a courtesy to the other residents of Pine Lake Retreat and because of the dual purpose of the campus, all buildings are off limits with the exception of buildings used for residence and classes or opened by the permission of the camp.  Recreational facilities are to be used at scheduled times.  Any property damage done by students will be assessed to the student’s account.

Overnight Guests and Visitors
Space permitting, extra rooms in the dorms are available to accommodate family or friends who may visit.  There is a reasonable charge for room and board, and all arrangements for overnight guests or visitors must be made with a dean.  All other accommodations must be prearranged with Pine Lake Retreat.
